It was one of the rare experiences to be sketching on a Kelong ( off shore fish farm). The weather was nice but not windy as I would expect around December period. This Kelong was located at western Singapore and as what I understand, it is becoming stricter guided by coastal police and nowadays they will stop any trespasser who try to step onto the Jetty.
We were lucky to be guided by my husband’s friend who is one of the fish farm owner. The main transport for the fish farmer is basically just boat.Everything on the kelong is simple. There’s no electricity , no water and no wifi and the flooring are made up of connecting wood planks. This was my boy first visit and he was really thrilled . And take note most of the time, children are no allowed to stay on Kelong. This may be due to safety purpose.
These are some of the sketches I had done .
The kitchen is exceptional small with simple equipment and utensils
There were lots of blue crabs and they were so fresh !
The kelong can be as huge as a football field. Every steps on the plank have to be extremely careful as there’s a tendency to have your foot caught in between the gap. All sizes fishes are kept in different partition as when the fishes are outgrown , farmer will move them to next partition .And when they are grew to a certain size, they will be ready to sell to supermarket or exported overseas and that is when the farmer will be the busiest moment.
